I’ve spent thirty years working inside HR, and the inbox problem is not new. I have seen it as an HR Director, I have seen it across the organisations I have worked with through BluesaltHR, the HR consultancy I founded that places and supports HR professionals across a range of businesses. Whether a company has one person handling all of people operations or a full team, the pattern is the same: the inbox owns the day and the strategic work waits.
What I kept observing, in company after company, was that the emails consuming the most time were rarely the ones that required the most expertise. Leave requests, policy questions, onboarding queries, recurring payroll questions: these were not hard to answer. They were just relentless. And because they were relentless, they were pushing out the work that actually required an experienced HR professional.
I built Onah because I had spent long enough watching that happen from the inside. I knew what the inbox was taking from people who were capable of so much more.
